About Elan Valley Special Protection Area

Elan Valley Special Protection Area is situated in Powys, Wales, encompassing the extensive Elan Valley reservoirs and surrounding upland habitats. The SPA covers a broad area of upland moorland, peat bogs, lightly wooded slopes, and open water created by a series of reservoirs constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to supply water to Birmingham and the West Midlands. The landscape combines engineered beauty with wild nature, with the reservoirs set among rolling hills and open moorland. Ecologically, it is of high conservation importance due to the presence of rare and vulnerable bird species, including hen harrier, merlin, peregrine falcon, and red kite, all benefiting from the protected habitats. Besides avifauna, the valleys are home to other key wildlife such as otters and various upland plants. Historically, the area gained significance following the construction of the dams and Victorian-era damside architecture, which remains a draw for visitors alongside stunning walking trails. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy hiking numerous waymarked trails of varying lengths, cycling on the dam roads, and wildlife watching. The proximity to large water bodies also allows for fishing and tranquil paddle sports. The Elan Valley's combination of natural beauty, protected species, and engineered structures make it a remarkable destination for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone interested in Welsh outdoor heritage.
